The Love Hypothesis Is Out on Prime Video: Its Origin Story Is Better Than Its Plot.

The Love Hypothesis, adapted from Ali Hazelwood's bestselling romance novel, is now streaming globally on Prime Video, with Lili Reinhart as biology PhD candidate Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as the intimidating Dr Adam Carlsen. What most viewers will not know is that the book began life as Star Wars fanfiction about Rey and Kylo Ren, with Adam Carlsen built on Adam Driver's character. Bateman, who plays him, is married to Daisy Ridley the actress who played Rey. Director Claire Scanlon and screenwriter Sarah Rothschild lean into the joke, dressing Bateman in black for almost the entire film.

The casting coincidence nobody planned

Start with the part that sounds invented.

Ali Hazelwood's novel, published in 2021, grew out of Reylo fanfiction stories written by fans pairing Rey and Kylo Ren from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, transplanted into an alternate universe where nobody has a lightsaber and the tension is academic rather than galactic. The brooding, intimidating, dressed-in-black male lead was built on Adam Driver's character. He is even called Adam.

Casting then handed the role to Tom Bateman.

Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley. Ridley played Rey.

So the man playing a character derived from Kylo Ren is, in real life, married to Rey. Nobody involved appears to have engineered this, and it is difficult to imagine a more improbable way for a fanfiction-to-film pipeline to close its own loop.

The film knows. Bateman spends almost the entire runtime in head-to-toe black, one of several nods Scanlon and Rothschild built in for anyone who knows where the story came from.

What the film is

Olive Smith is a third-year biology PhD candidate with a carefully planned academic life and no interest in disrupting it.

Her best friend Anh, played by Rachel Marsh, has feelings for Jeremy, played by Nicholas Duvernay who happens to be Olive's crush. Trying to convince Anh she has moved on, Olive impulsively kisses the first man she sees in a corridor.

That man is Dr Adam Carlsen, a professor with a reputation for being difficult.

What follows is a fake relationship, entered into for reasons that make sense to both of them and to nobody else, which proceeds to do what fake relationships in romance novels always do.

Jaboukie Young-White plays Malcolm, Arty Froushan plays Tom, and Jeananne Goossen plays Dr Aslan. Reinhart, best known for Riverdale, is also an executive producer on the film.

Where and when to watch

The Love Hypothesis released globally on Prime Video on 23 September 2026. It is streaming now, included with a Prime subscription, with no separate rental or purchase required.

There is no theatrical release. It was made for Prime Video by Amazon MGM Studios with MRC, Bisous Pictures and The Cantillon Company.

What this means for you

If you have read the book. Early reviews suggest a faithful adaptation rather than a reinvention, and the elements readers care about — the fake dating, the chemistry, Olive's friendships are reported to be intact. Collider described it as a near-perfect rom-com experiment and singled out Reinhart as charming and funny, with Bateman giving a deceptively complex performance that opens up as the film progresses.

If you have not read the book. You do not need to. This is a self-contained romantic comedy and nothing in it depends on prior knowledge. India TV gave it three out of five and described it as sweet, funny, occasionally steamy and charming, while noting it leans on familiar conventions. That is a fair summary of what you are getting.

If you are watching for the Star Wars angle. Watch Bateman's wardrobe. The black is deliberate. Reviewers who know the origins have noted several other winks scattered through the film.

If you liked it and want more. Several more Hazelwood novels have been optioned for adaptation, on Prime Video and elsewhere. This is the first of what is likely to be a run of them.

If you are deciding whether it is worth ninety minutes. The honest read across reviews is that it does not reinvent the genre and does not try to. Its strength is the central chemistry and Scanlon's light touch. If you want a competent, warm, unchallenging rom-com, it delivers exactly that. If you want something that surprises you, it will not.

How a fanfic became a bestseller became a film

The path here is worth tracing, because it is now a recognised route rather than a fluke.

Hazelwood published The Love Hypothesis in 2021. It spent ten months on the New York Times bestseller list. It finished second in the Goodreads Choice Awards for Romance that year, behind People We Meet on Vacation by 683 votes out of nearly 436,000 cast which gives some sense of how narrowly it missed and how many people were voting.

Film rights were acquired in October 2022 by Elizabeth Cantillon's Bisous Pictures, with Hazelwood saying at the time that she was excited for the next step in Olive and Adam's story.

Casting took almost three years. Reinhart was announced on 16 July 2025. Bateman was announced the following day.

Behind the camera, Scanlon directs from Rothschild's screenplay, with cinematography by Matthew Clark, editing by Tia Nolan and a score by Laura Karpman.

Why this particular pipeline keeps working

Fanfiction-to-publication is no longer unusual, and the reason is straightforward: a story that has already been read and loved by a large audience arrives at a publisher with its demand pre-tested.

What is different about Hazelwood's case is the field she chose. The Love Hypothesis is set in academic STEM, with a heroine whose career is a real part of the plot rather than set dressing. Hazelwood has a background in neuroscience, and the specificity shows. That detail is a large part of why the book found readers beyond the fandom it started in.

Prime Video has been building steadily in this space, and the platform's recent adaptations of book-first properties have performed well. The Love Hypothesis is the most direct test yet of whether a BookTok phenomenon converts into streaming numbers.
