Formula 1 is heading to Singapore for the 17th round of the 2026 season, and there is plenty to watch before the lights go out on Sunday.
The race will take place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit from October 9 to 11, with the Singapore weekend also hosting a Sprint. The event is the final part of the current triple-header after Azerbaijan and Malaysia.
The championship battle has also become more interesting after the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has extended his lead over teammate George Russell to 84 points, while Max Verstappen enters Singapore after taking his first win of the season in Malaysia.
Kimi Antonelli Leads The Championship Fight
Kimi Antonelli arrives in Singapore in a strong position in the 2026 drivers' championship.
His Mercedes teammate George Russell had been challenging him for the title, but Russell's retirement in Malaysia allowed Antonelli to increase his advantage to 84 points.
Antonelli does not necessarily need to win in Singapore. His main target will be to continue scoring strongly and prevent Russell from reducing the gap.
The pressure, therefore, is different for the two Mercedes drivers.
George Russell Faces A Major Engine Problem
George Russell's Singapore weekend has become more difficult because Mercedes has confirmed that he will take an engine-related penalty.
Russell has used up his season's allocation of four engines and needs another power unit. As a result, he is expected to start Sunday's Grand Prix from the back of the grid.
This is especially significant in Singapore because overtaking is difficult on the tight Marina Bay circuit.
Russell won the Singapore GP last year, but repeating that result will now require him to recover from a major grid disadvantage.
Max Verstappen Arrives With Fresh Confidence
Max Verstappen also has an important story heading into Singapore.
The Red Bull driver won the Malaysian Grand Prix, giving him his first victory of the 2026 season.
It was also Red Bull's first victory using its own power unit.
However, Verstappen has warned that Singapore will be a very different test from Malaysia.
The Marina Bay circuit is slower, tighter and more technical than Sepang. Verstappen has also never won the Singapore Grand Prix, giving him another target this weekend.
Why Singapore Is One Of F1's Toughest Races
The Marina Bay Street Circuit is only 4.927 kilometres long, but it has 19 corners and is known for its narrow, demanding layout.
Drivers race under floodlights at night, but the tropical conditions still make the event physically demanding.
Formula 1 says drivers can lose as much as 3kg of body weight during a Singapore race because of the heat and humidity.
The circuit also has a high Safety Car history. Formula 1's statistics show a 67% Safety Car probability based on the previous six Singapore races.
That can make strategy and timing extremely important.

Heat Warning Declared For Singapore GP
The weather could become another major factor this weekend.
The FIA has issued a heat hazard declaration for the Singapore Grand Prix, with temperatures expected to exceed 31°C.
Because of the conditions, teams must fit a driver cooling system, such as a liquid-cooled vest, unless they choose to accept a ballast penalty instead.
The hot and humid conditions can also increase tyre wear and put extra physical pressure on drivers.
Could Rain Change The Singapore GP?
Rain is another possibility that teams will be watching closely.
Formula 1's weather forecast says showers are possible during the weekend. Wet conditions could make the Sprint weekend even more difficult because teams have less practice time than during a normal Grand Prix weekend.
A wet Marina Bay race could also change tyre strategy, safety-car timing and qualifying performance.
FIA Makes A Software Change After Malaysia Chaos
There is another technical story to watch.
After the rain-affected Malaysian Grand Prix weekend, the FIA investigated a software problem that caused some cars to suffer unexpected power loss during the formation procedure.
The FIA said the software configuration used during the Malaysia event will be reinstated for Singapore if similar wet conditions are expected. A further wet-weather software update is planned before the United States Grand Prix.
This means teams will be watching both the weather and the revised power-unit software closely.
Why Russell's Penalty Could Change The Championship Fight
Russell's grid penalty could have a major effect on the championship battle.
Singapore is not an easy circuit for overtaking. Formula 1 says 11 of the previous 16 Singapore races were won from pole position, showing the importance of qualifying strongly.
Starting from the back means Russell may have to pass a large part of the field just to score strong points.
At the same time, Antonelli can focus on protecting his championship advantage.
What To Watch From Red Bull
Max Verstappen's performance will also be closely followed.
His Malaysian victory showed that Red Bull could challenge Mercedes when the conditions and circuit characteristics suited the car.
But Verstappen himself has cautioned that Malaysia and Singapore are very different tracks.
Singapore will therefore provide a better indication of whether Red Bull's Malaysian pace was a genuine step forward or mainly suited to Sepang.
