Jio Platforms is asking investors to look beyond mobile data and phone plans. As its ₹30,213-crore IPO opens, the company is highlighting artificial intelligence, cloud services, enterprise technology and 7,220 patent applications as signs of where it wants to go next. There is a significant caveat: its telecom subsidiary still accounted for 87.74% of consolidated revenue in FY26.

That tension is the central question behind Jio’s technology pitch. The company already has a huge network and customer base to build on, but its non-telecom businesses have not yet become a comparable source of revenue. For investors, the ambition is clear. Whether Jio can turn it into a larger digital-services business is still the test.

Jio IPO: what is the company asking investors to believe?

Jio Platforms is presenting itself as a technology-led digital platform, with connectivity as the base for consumer services, business products and its own technology systems. Its prospectus describes services spanning entertainment, cloud, gaming, smart-home products, private 5G and enterprise solutions.

The pitch is that a network serving hundreds of millions of people can also help Jio distribute more services, while its technology infrastructure can support business customers and, potentially, international partnerships. Managing Director Akash Ambani has described AI, cloud and digital services as layers being built on top of the connectivity platform.

What does the 7,220 patent figure mean?

Jio has filed 7,220 patent applications covering areas such as 4G, 5G and 6G, cloud-native network architecture and AI-driven network automation. The figure describes applications filed. It should not be read as 7,220 patents already granted.

The company also says about 45% of its full-time workforce, or 12,477 employees, works in digital products and technology development. Those figures help explain why Jio wants its IPO story to include research and technology capabilities, alongside its telecom scale.

Jio’s AI and cloud plans

Jio’s prospectus identifies cloud computing, managed services for businesses, cloud gaming, connected devices and cloud-based PCs among the areas it wants to develop. It also describes JioBrain as an AI platform for network operations, predictive analysis, automation and enterprise applications.

Its consumer services include products such as JioAICloud, JioTV+ and JioSaavn, while its business portfolio includes cloud, security, private 5G and managed network services. The company is also exploring international partnerships to sell or deploy some of its network and digital technology outside India. These are potential growth avenues; the filing does not mean they already contribute revenue on the scale of telecom.

The financial reality: telecom remains Jio’s engine

Jio Platforms reported ₹1,46,885 crore in revenue, ₹76,255 crore in EBITDA and ₹30,049 crore in profit after tax for FY26. Its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, contributed 87.74% of consolidated revenue, 94.88% of EBITDA and 93.76% of profit after tax, according to the company’s red herring prospectus.

Jio Platforms operates as a single reporting segment, and the prospectus says digital connectivity makes up substantially all its revenue. Some digital products are bundled with connectivity, so their individual revenues are not separately disclosed. A Shriram Research estimate cited by The Economic Times put standalone digital-services revenue at about ₹16,167 crore, or roughly 11% of consolidated revenue.

The distinction matters: Jio has technology products and a broad set of stated plans, but its current financial profile remains heavily tied to connectivity.

Jio’s scale gives it room to expand

As of June 2026, Jio’s telecom subsidiary served 533.3 million customers in India. The company carried around 60% of the country’s wireless data traffic in FY26, while its wireless broadband network covered more than 99% of the population, according to its prospectus.

That reach could give Jio a route to bring new services to consumers and businesses. Akash Ambani has also pointed to gaps that could support further growth, including limited fixed-broadband access and low digital-services adoption among small businesses. The opportunity is large, but reaching more users is different from proving that new services can generate significant, lasting profits.

Jio IPO details and the question investors face

Jio Platforms’ IPO is sized at ₹30,213 crore and opened for subscription on October 21, with bidding scheduled to close on October 23. At the top of the price band, the issue values the company at about ₹10.3 lakh crore. Up to ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds is earmarked to repay or prepay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm.

The offer combines a large existing telecom business with a bet on future growth in AI, cloud and enterprise services. The key question is not whether Jio has filed patents or announced technology plans. It is whether those capabilities can grow into businesses that contribute materially to revenue and earnings.
