India's white-collar hiring grew 2% in September 2026 compared to September 2025. On the surface, that looks like a slow month. A closer look shows a steady but more selective market, where demand is moving toward specialised skills, especially AI. This article covers which sectors and cities led, what changed for freshers, and how to prepare for the festive and year-end hiring season.

Why Hiring Growth Was Just 2%

In August 2026, hiring grew 14% year on year. September's 2% is much lower, but that doesn't mean the market is cooling. Last year, a large part of the festive season fell in August. This year it moved to September, which made August look stronger and September weaker.

The hiring index tells the same story. It stood at 3,053 in September 2026 against 3,002 a year ago, so overall hiring is stable. What has changed is the way companies hire. They are moving away from bulk hiring and looking for people with the right skills.

AI/ML and Auto Lead, While Education and Telecom Lag

AI and machine learning jobs grew 20% year on year, ten times faster than the overall market. Software job posts that mention AI are also up 138% since the second quarter of 2024, and tech roles make up 51% of all active hiring demand.

The auto sector grew 11%, led by Hyderabad (+26%), Chennai (+19%) and Bengaluru (+18%). BPO/ITES grew 4%, and GCC hiring within that sector jumped 59%. Overall GCC hiring rose 4%.

Other sectors were weaker

  • IT/Software services: down 4% year on year, even though active openings reached about 57,000, an 18-month high
  • Software product companies: openings fell 17% from the previous month
  • Hospitality: down 11%
  • Telecom: down 12%
  • Education: down 18%
  • Pharma/Biotech and FMCG: down 4% each

The market is splitting in two. Candidates with AI skills are in demand, while others in slower sectors face a longer wait.

City-Wise Hiring: South India Leads

Hyderabad led the big cities with 9% growth, followed by Chennai at 6%. Bengaluru and Kolkata grew 4% each, and Pune stayed flat. Mumbai and Delhi-NCR both fell about 6%. GCC hiring grew 23% in Hyderabad and 13% in Chennai.

Smaller cities showed mixed results in September. Jamnagar (+17%), Nellore (+13%), Gandhinagar (+10%) and Coimbatore (+2%) grew. Jaipur (-4%), Lucknow (-8%) and Chandigarh (-18%) declined. Even so, tier II and tier III cities are expected to account for 45-50% of festive hiring, with growth of 25-30%.

These two views fit together because festive hiring is mostly seasonal and gig work, which regular job-posting data does not fully capture. Online shopping, quick delivery and organised retail are spreading beyond the metros, and they need people on the ground. Cities to watch include Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Surat, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Chandigarh and Kochi.

Hiring by Experience Level

Hiring for freshers (0-3 years) grew just 1% in September, against 15% in August. Across experience levels, the picture was uneven:

  • 0-3 years: +1%
  • 4-7 years: -2%
  • 8-12 years: +5%
  • 13-15 years: +7%
  • 16+ years: +5%

Within the fresher segment, some areas did much better. Banking and financial services saw a 14% rise in fresher hiring, and non-IT sectors like oil and gas also saw double-digit growth. Coimbatore (+20%) and Vadodara (+13%) emerged as fresher hiring hotspots.

Opportunities Coming for Freshers

The festive season could open many doors:

  • Festive hiring is expected to rise 15-20% in the second half of 2026, creating about 22.5 lakh seasonal and gig jobs.
  • Freshers could make up 20-25% of festive hires.
  • Companies are planning 12-14 weeks ahead, so openings can appear quickly.
  • Candidates who can join immediately may earn 12-18% more.

Global capability centres (GCCs), the large company offices in India that handle tech and data work, could add 2.8-4 million jobs by FY30. Nearly one in five may go to freshers with AI, cloud, data or cyber security skills.

How Freshers Can Stand Out

Employers say AI tools are making many resumes look alike, so real skills and clear communication matter again. Freshers with proven AI skills can earn 20-40% more.

  • Learn AI basics and build one small project to show your work.
  • Add a second skill in data, cloud or cyber security.
  • Practise speaking and writing clearly.
  • Stay ready to join quickly, since early availability can improve both your chances and your pay.

Hiring Outlook for October-December 2026

65% of employers in India plan to hire more between October and December, up from 59% in the previous quarter. India is the most optimistic job market in the world, 25 points above the global average. All nine sectors expect to hire, with finance and insurance (60%) and hospitality (58%) the strongest. Axis Bank plans about 12,000-12,500 campus hires in FY27, up from about 11,500-11,600 in FY26.

These hiring plans were collected in July, so they are plans, not guarantees. That is why early preparation gives candidates an edge.
